Preventative maintenance

There is a small list of things you should try to complete a couple times per year to keep your Micro-Comm SCADA system running at it’s very best:

1.    Flush transducers. Disconnect the line going to the transducer and let it flow to remove any debris that may have built up. Also use some of the running water to flush out the fitting in the end of the transducer.

2.    Test batteries. If the RTU has battery backup, turn off line power at the breaker. The RTU should remain ON and communicating while running on battery backup. Allow the system to run on battery for at least 10 minutes, however run time may be much longer depending on size and condition of the backup battery.

3.    Look up. Make note of your antenna directions. Sometimes the wind will turn the antenna which will cause signal problems. You can make note of the antenna direction inside the RTU enclosure so you will have it immediately accessible in the future.

4.    Look up again. Make sure the coax is secured and not hanging loose from the antenna and/or swaying in the wind. If coax is loose, chances are it will need to be replaced soon.

5.    Seal RTU enclosures. Insects often find their way into the ‘warm’ RTU especially late Summer or in the Fall. Unfortunately, they can short out critical electronic components. Plumbers putty works well for sealing small holes.

6.    Too hot to touch? If the radio or power supply is extremely warm to the touch, it may be a sign of a coming problem. Contact the Micro-Comm service department for help.

7.    Keep it clean. If your SCADAview computer is in a dusty/moist environment, it will pay to have it opened and professionally cleaned to remove dust and debris. Dust tends to impede cooling which can lead to computer failure.

8.    Get out your voltmeter.
